Presentation

The activities of the Group of Solid State (SS) combines chemical synthesis and crystal growth expertise with several solid state physics characterization techniques, for the research of new compounds with unconventional electrical and magnetic properties, as well as the establishment of correlations between molecular and crystal structure with electrical and magnetic properties.

The type of materials studied include molecule based charge transfer conducting or magnetic materials, oxides and magnetic intermetallics with uranium and thorium.

The main activities of the group include synthetic organic and coordination chemistry for the preparation of charge transfer complexes and their crystal growth by electrocrystallisation, high temperature preparation techniques (arc and induction melting with Czochralski, Bridgman and Floating Zone Facilities) for intermetallics, single crystal and powder x-ray diffraction, Mössbauer spectroscopy, EPR, magnetisation of specific heath and electrical transport measurements in a broad range of temperatures (0.3-400 K) and under magnetic fields up to 18 T.
