Activities of scientific coordination, planning and management

M. Isabel Dias (MID) is since 2005 responsible for the luminescence dating laboratory, and her main role includes the coordination of research and services activities in various domains (i.e. Cultural Heritage and Earth Sciences), as well as, the laboratory maintenance and equipment upgrading, and promotion of new areas of application, and the responsibility of technicians activities.

MID has been the coordinator researcher, responsible in IST-ITN and / or team member of projects funded by the European Comission, Foundation for Science and Technology, GRICES / CSIC / CNRS, Feder, EDIA, CRUP, International Atomic Energy Agency, Portuguese Institute of Archaeology, as well as other public or private institutions, and services.
MID has established numerous national and international collaborations in research and education with several universities and research centres, and has participated in supervision of students of different academic degrees and of master and doctoral programs.
MID is teaching courses for doctoral, masters and undergraduate degree seminars in national and international universities in the fields of geosciences, geology, mineralogy and geochemistry of clays, archaeometry, nuclear methods of analyses and NORMs.
MID has participated actively in the organization of international conferences in Portugal and abroad, and in national and international scientific committees at different levels.


MID specializes in Mineralogy, Geochemistry and Technological properties of Clays, in view of its potential industrial use and paleoenvironmental reconstruction studies. She developed skills in the application of nuclear methods of analysis in geosciences, environment, NORM, archaeometry, among other areas, with special focus on the development of national and international projects in Earth Sciences and Environment, and Cultural Heritage (movable and immovable), highlighting the interdisciplinary nature of most of them.

Main Scientific Areas of Research

The research activities are included in the domains of nuclear techniques, cultural heritage (movable and immovable), archaeometry, geochemistry plus mineralogy, natural radioactivity, environment and geosciences, natural nanoparticles, mineralogy, luminescence methods, mainly in the:

  • Development and application of nuclear analytical techniques and related, and radiation technologies in the characterization of geological and cultural materials;
  • Geochemistry and mineralogy of clay materials, applied to studies in the following domains: sedimentology, stratigraphy, paleoclimatology, mineral resources, medical geology, cultural heritage, archaeology and environment;
  • Environment – establishment of the natural background (geochemical and mineralogical) and evaluation of anthropogenic inputs;
  • Absolute dating methods, namely luminescence, applied to geological and archaeological materials and contexts, by using both thermoluminescence (TL) and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL);
  • Clay minerals associations and trace elements contents as lithostratigraphics, paleogeographic and paleoclimatic markers;
  • Development and use of nuclear techniques for the characterization, diagnosis of the degradation state and conservation of cultural heritage artefacts;
  • Chemical and radiological characterization of clay minerals and element mobility in clays for healing use;
  • Coordination of fieldwork and sampling campaigns activities (geological sampling; sampling for luminescence measurements and dating; environmental dosimetry; Cultural heritage campaigns – sampling at museums, private collectors, etc.).
