Main Scientific Areas of Research
- The main activity of António Pereira Gonçalves in the
last ten years has been the study of intermetallic compounds with d and
f elements (including uranium and thorium). This work involves the
prediction, synthesis, and characterization of new intermetallic compounds.
Intermetallic compounds with d and f elements can show unusual
magnetic and electrical transport properties, like supermagnetism, heavy
fermion behavior or superconductivity. The motivation of this work is to
establish relationships between the structural aspects and the physical
properties, by a systematic study of this type of materials to provide the
adequate data.
-
Recently he started a project dedicated to the implementation
of a sputtering system for the deposition of uranium-containing films and multilayers. He is responsible for the High Temperature Synthesis and
Crystal Growth and for the Films Deposition Laboratories.
